Your Wedding Stationery, ideas for invitations thank you cards

The wedding invitation is your first opportunity to delight your friends, set the tone for your wedding and allow your guests a glimpse of what is to come! There are also many other stationery items you may like to incorporate, but, as with most aspects of your wedding planning, the best advice is to keep it simple.

Things to think about

So, are you going to make your own invitations or find an 'invitation expert' to do it for you?

Before you make your decision consider the following:

If you are on a tight budget or like the hand-crafted look you may choose to make your own invitations. It can also be very satisfying. You could use your own or a friend's computer graphics skills, or, for a hand-made look it may be a time to get a few friends together for a working bee! But making invitations can take a lot more time than you might expect, by the time you have browsed shops and magazines, selected paper, fussed over the right text for the invitation, made a mock up of one invitation, and then made them all.

If your spare time is limited or you want a highly finished look, you may prefer to have your invitations made for you. A good invitation specialist will provide a wealth of ideas and suggestions, a range of sample invitation texts, knowledge of specialty papers, wedding invitations to inspire you, and help to capture a look which suits your wedding style. A specialist will also help you to plan all your stationery requirements from the outset.

Where to begin

Look at examples of wedding stationery in specialist stationery shops, talk to recently married couples, or visit your local printer, to get ideas about how your wedding stationery might look. You can use elements you like from other invitations to create your own look. Regardless of who is making them, don't be afraid to be creative and express yourself! If you have a wedding planner or design specialist talk to her/him about the look of your invitations in the context of the wedding as a whole.

TIPS
  • Send invitations at least 10 weeks in advance (for international visitors it will help them to get to the wedding, possibly more cheaply), or earlier if it is a busy time of year.
  • Keep a check list of the invites sent out and replies returned.
  • Be sure to double-check all spelling - spelling errors do sneak in!
  • Order extra invitations to allow for mistakes when writing, and ensure you spell your guests' names correctly!
